The Yakuza (first name unrevealed, last name Atatsuma)[2] is a character who can provide Ryoba Aishi with favors and assist her in eliminating her rivals in 1980s Mode.

The Yakuza is a smartly dressed, serious-looking adult man. He has slicked-back, shoulder-length black hair, matching eyes, and a goatee. He sports a red, white, and black tattoo sleeve on both arms.

His outfit consists of a white button-up with rolled-up sleeves, with the collar secured with a simple black tie. He sports a dark-colored waistcoat along with matching formal dark-colored slacks and polished black oxfords.

As a teenager, he had shorter hair. He wore a scrunched-up white cloth around his head, a gray tank top with a red circular logo reading "Datsun", above knee-length jagged pants, and black flip-flops. Below his knees are covered in numerous scratch marks. He holds one hand with a slightly warped black metal rod with a bandage wrapped around the handle, and Togo's hand.

Description[]

A man with connections to Japan's criminal underground. He sells various types of illegal contraband, ranging from narcotics to poison to explosives. He refuses to divulge his name, but the elaborate tattoos on his arms make it clear that he is affiliated with a yakuza clan.
For a price, he is willing to abduct a girl and ensure that she is never heard from again.
He is tight-lipped about the ultimate fates of his victims. Does he execute them quickly and painlessly? Does he harvest their organs before disposing of them? Does he sell them into slavery in another country? Or does he do something even more sinister? It's a mystery; he has no intention of revealing what happens to the people who "disappear" because of him.
Aside from selling contraband and performing abductions, there is one more service that he offers. He is aware that kidnapping a member of a rich family and demanding ransom money is a good way to make a lot of cash, so he is willing to pay for kidnapped victims.
The Yakuza has no interest in doing business with strangers. In order to make use of his services, the player would somehow need to earn his favor. Apparently, the only thing in the world that can cause him to display even the slightest flicker of emotion is his younger brother, who was a student who attended Akademi.

— His description from the official website.

According to YandereDev in the Osana Progress and Yakuza Thoughts video, when the Yakuza and his younger brother, Togo, were young, they had a very difficult life: one parent was dead, while the other was unable to care for them. So the Yakuza had to assume the responsibility of taking care of himself, his younger brother, and their sickly parent as well. His family needed money more than anything, and because conventional jobs weren't paying enough, the Yakuza turned to a life of crime to earn enough money to provide a good life for himself and Togo. This eventually led him to join the Yakuza.

When Togo was self-sufficient by 2000, the Yakuza decided to quit the organization. To avoid leaving on bad terms and avoid his boss holding a grudge against him, he performed a big favor for his boss. After doing this favor, he announced he was leaving.[3] He hasn't been involved in organized crime and has been clean since.[4]

After leaving, he lived a law-abiding life. Once every 5 years, an old associate of his would contact him for "one last job", usually being a bank robbery or needing him to be part of an elite group for a criminal act. He would refuse, but eventually caved in and helped. His life has been mostly crime-free, aside from joining in 5 "really big" heists.[3]

Gameplay[]

The Yakuza appears at night within the town in a dark alley, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, along with his two employees chatting with each other.

If Ryoba attempts to enter the alleyway without completing Togo's task, the Yakuza will warn her to get out of the alleyway. However, if his brother is dead or missing, he will not appear in the alleyway. The Yakuza's services can be accessed after Ryoba has completed Togo Atatsuma's task. The player is presented with a menu that has 3 submenus, each one offering a different service.

If the player chooses "Abduction" menu, they will be presented with the list of rivals who are currently present at school and can choose to eliminate any of them. The cost starts from $ 1000 for kidnapping Kaguya Wakaizumi and increases by $ 1000 each week. Ryoba cannot request anyone else's abduction. When The Yakuza kidnaps Ryoba's rivals, he sells the girls to another country.[5]

If the player chooses "Contraband" menu, they will be presented with the list of 5 different illegal items Ryoba can buy. She can then bring to school from home via the list of items found by selecting Ryoba's bedroom door.

  • Lockpick: Cost 100 dollars. It can be used to pick the lock to the Gardening Club Shed and the Nurse's Cabinet, but it can only be used once before it breaks.
  • Fake ID: Costs 100 dollars. It can be used to purchase certain items in Buraza Town that specify an age requirement.

Ransom

If the player chooses "Ransom" menu, they will be given the option to trade wealthy female students for money if those students are currently in Ryoba's basement. It ranges from $1100 to $2000. After Ryoba gives the Yakuza a student, their family will pay the ransom, and the student will be back at school the next day. However, the student will become nervous, paranoid, and traumatized for the rest of their life; their eyes will become completely blank, and their persona will be changed to coward.

The Yakuza cares deeply for his younger brother, whom he had to raise alongside caring for his parent. The last thing that the Yakuza wants is for his younger brother to struggle, however, he also doesn't want him to enter a life of crime.[6] Togo likely doesn't know that his brother is in the Yakuza and just thinks he's "cool".

When Ryoba meets the Yakuza, he begins to say that he wants her to do something regarding Togo, but cuts himself off. He was going to ask Ryoba to watch over his little brother and make sure that he doesn't get in trouble and doesn't get too involved in crime. However, he hates saying anything too emotional or sentimental or exposing his worries and vulnerabilities to others, so he decided to just cut himself off and not say anything at all.[7] While he cares about his younger brother, he also cares about his image as a tough guy, since he doesn't want to be seen as emotionally vulnerable.[8]

In Mission Mode, Ryoba can kill the Yakuza's younger brother without any repercussions. This is because the Yakuza and Togo have fallen out and do not consider each other family. The Yakuza feels nothing about Togo's death, since the latter is now a stranger to him.[9]

Ryoba Aishi[]

Main article: Ryoba Aishi

Canonically, Ryoba took Togo's task on the first week.[10] Ryoba did make an impression on the Yakuza, but it was not because she did business with him frequently, but rather appearing in court on national TV.[11] They have not kept in contact with her.[12]

Trivia[]

  • The Yakuza was added to YandereDev's "characters" on August 21st, 2017.
  • YandereDev has decided on a name for him, but is unsure what opportunity would grant the player to learn about it.[13]
  • As a specified character, he was introduced in the video "Yakuza in Yandere Simulator".
  • As of the October 17th 2019 build, he made his first appearance in-game within the town in a dark alley.
    • As of October 10, 2021 Build, he can no longer be found on the street in 202X Mode, as he is meant to be a character in 1980s Mode.
  • He is currently one of the few characters in 1980s Mode who is fully voiced.[14]
  • Any student who has been kidnapped will refuse to follow Ryoba Aishi for the following days.
  • Even after you ransom a club student, the club will still close for the rest of the game due to having fewer than 5 members for one day.
    • This makes the player decide whether the money is worth the removal of that club's benefits.
    • To not close the club, the player can join that club before they ransom the student to stop the club from closing, but quitting the club will close the benefits of that club.
  • In older builds, all female students could be ransomed for $1000, with the wealthy students having the usual greater prices. This option was later removed.
  • He still has these criminal contacts, so if Ayano Aishi found a way to contact him, she could gain access to things that even Info-chan wouldn't have.[3]
  • If Togo is killed, the Yakuza will no longer appear in the alleyway in town for the rest of the game.
