Rivals are the main antagonists of Yandere Simulator.
Overview
Every week, the protagonist encounters a new girl who threatens to take away her Senpai. The protagonist has to eliminate her by any means without being caught before 6:00 PM of Friday; otherwise, she will successfully confess to him, leading to "senpai lost" Game Over.
Each rival has a distinct personality, appearance, and the reason to fall in love or otherwise take Senpai away from the protagonist. They interact with Senpai at least two times every day, which makes him develop mutual feelings for the girl. As the game progresses, each rival is more difficult to defeat than the previous one due to different factors.
The protagonist can eliminate them all using the methods listed below; additionally, each rival will also have at least one unique elimination method[1] that is exclusive to that specific rival.[2]
The protagonist will not be able to threaten, intimidate, or blackmail[3] rivals, only directly eliminate them, whether it's violently or peacefully,[4] as the game is about taking direct action against them. Once a rival has been eliminated non-lethally, she becomes a regular student, aquires different persona type appropriate for her personality, and adopts a routine that makes her as non-threatening to the player as possible. If the rival was eliminated before deadline, the player has an option to skip forward to the next week, or play through the current week in the week calendar.
Elimination Methods
Rivals
All Story Mode rivals are based on popular anime and manga tropes and cliches, and were built around their elimination methods.[5] They have been officially created, planned out,[6] and designed since February 2016.[7]

Osana is the first rival and Taro's childhood friend. She is based on "tsundere" archetype; while she's friendly to everyone else, she often acts rude towards Taro because she's afraid of revealing her true feelings to him, not knowing that her feelings are actually mutual. Despite this, she gathers enough courage to confess to him on Friday.
Osana also has a best friend named Raibaru Fumetsu; a former Martial Arts Club leader and one of the strongest girls at school. They spend almost all of their time together and she's Osana's confidant. Depending on the difficulty settings, Ayano will not be able to fight Raibaru at all or will only be able to enter a struggle with her, making it impossible to eliminate Osana at the very start of the day.

Amai is the second rival and the president of the Cooking Club. She is a warm, gentle, kind-hearted girl.
Amai meets Taro at a bus stop when he's feeling dejected about losing his childhood friend and tries to comfort him by offering sweets and inviting him to help with her bakery. Secretly worries about never getting a chance to experience romance, and wanting someone to care about her the same way Taro does about Osana, Amai actively tries to win his heart. In the meantime, she's running a baking sale in the school plaza to help her family, as the bakery is struggling financially.

Kizana is the third rival and president of the Drama Club. She's based on the "himedere" archetype, being a snobbish and arrogant person. She dreams of becoming a famous actress and strives to be at the top of every list, be it popularity, school grades, or club funding.[8] Despite being a rather popular girl at school, most people get annoyed at her for her egoistical behavior to be actual friends with her unless they admire her acting abilities enough to ignore her flaws.[9]
Kizana meets Taro in front of a theater when he's feeling at his lowest after losing Amai, and immediately marks him as a perfect candidate for the lead role in her next play. Even though Taro doesn't explicitly agree to participate, Kizana practically forces him, as in her words, he "must and burn his as fuel to elevate his next artistic creation to greater heights". She shows only her good side around Taro, hiding her true nature from him; so despite considering Kizana a bit bossy, Taro will be impressed by her acting abilities and be flustered by what she thinks of him.[10]

Oka is the fourth rival and president of the Occult Club. She's a shy, timid and socially awkward girl[11] considered a freak by many for her obsession with occult and everything supernatural, which most people don't take seriously.[9] Despite that, ghosts and other Supernatural Beings canonically exist in the game universe, so despite her club's futile attempts to summon a demon, their beliefs aren't completely ungrounded.
It is currently unknown how they will meet and what would truly make Oka fall in love with Taro; she thinks someone "put a spell on her", making her attempt to win his heart along with investigating the Seven Mysteries of Akademi. However, the way they meet will most likely be comical due to her awkward nature.[12]

Asu is the fifth rival and president of the Sports Club. She's based on "genki" archetype and has a cheerful and energetic personality. She also has a competitive side to her, so she will spend the first four weeks training for Olympics at a specialized institution.[13]
She will meet Taro when he is feeling drained after the first four weeks and will persuade him to do sports together, which appears to be her "love language".[14]

Muja is the sixth rival and trainee nurse. She's based on "unintentional sexual innuendos" trope,[15] having a pure and innocent personality despite constant suggestive moments.[16]
Muja is a student nurse[17] and will appear in Akademi as she will be receiving training from Nasu Kankoshi. Taro will be sick during her week, so he will have to visit her every day. She is a very physically attractive woman, which could help Taro fall for her, but the other factor is that she is very caring and interested in healing and helping others. In addition to falling in love with him, Muja will also develop respect for Taro because he knows a lot of things that Muja herself had to learn in school.[18]

Mida is the seventh rival and a teacher substituting Kaho Kanokogi. Being based on a "sexy teacher" trope, she's portrayed as a villain character, getting a thrill from seeing the boys developing crushes on her even though she knows it is wrong.[19]
Mida will pursue Taro because she is ready to "settle down".[20] Her week will revolve around Mida trying to give him more confidence and courage around girls by roleplaying with him and acting out various scenarios. In these scenarios, she pretends to be a cute younger student (kohai) who looks up to him (senpai).[21] Despite that Taro normally doesn't like women like Mida, and their potential relationship would be very complicated,[22] he won't be able to resist her charms.

Osoro is the eighth rival and leader of the delinquents. To most people, she's known as the strongest and most dangerous girl in school, who had allegedly beaten a number of people on her first day at school.[23] In reality, her closed-off and intimidating persona is most likely the result of her growing up in a poor and abusive family.[24] She had no close friends prior to her current "cronies", [25] and has no interested in making friends in present time; however, she seems to have warmed up to them over time.[26]
Osoro will not be present for the first seven weeks as Genka Kunahito, the guidance counselor, had suspended her in order to be able to reform the delinquents while their biggest negative influence, Osoro herself, isn't present at Akademi. The exact way how she will meet Senpai and what he sees in her is currently unknown, however, Osoro is hinted to have a "different side", most evident in the alternative line in the introductions video[27] and her relationship with her "cronies", as the structure of the group reminds much less of a gang than a club or a friend group.

Hanako is the ninth rival and Taro's younger sister. She is not in love with her brother, nor does she lust sexually after him, but she loves him so much that she does not want him to get a girlfriend, as she wants all of his attention.[28] Her usual behavior is described as "childish" and "overbearing",[9] and she seems to be extremely infantile, almost fully depended on her older brother.
Hanako decided that she could no longer bear to be enrolled in a different school from Taro, however, she will pass the entrance exams only in the ninth week.[29] On Friday, she will force her brother to promise to never abandon her and never get a girlfriend.[30]
In the Mission Mode timeline, Ayano's first victim was Taro. After a year of mourning his death, Hanako, now known as Nemesis, completely changed her personality and seeks revenge for the death of her brother.

Megami is the tenth rival and president of the Student Council. She's based on Mary Sue trope, being perfect in almost every possible aspect, from general and academic knowledge to looks and any task that doesn't require years of experience and knowledge.[31] She is a future CEO of Saikou Corp, a multinational corporation that has a monopoly over many industries in Yandere Simulator's world. Her grandfather, Saisho Saikou, held strong beliefs in eugenics and nationalism and controlled everything in his family, including his children's marriage and the way they raise children; this resulted in Megami being just "human" enough to not turn off people like her father, but otherwise superior to almost all other people.
Megami is currently forbidden from attending school during the first nine weeks for unknown reasons. She seems to be aware of Ayano's true nature, and her actions will most likely be directed more towards Ayano than Taro. However, it is currently unknown whether or not she actually has any personal feelings towards Taro.
- Main article: 1980s Mode
Like Story Mode, there are ten rivals, with one appearing each week. There is also a tutorial rival that only appears in the tutorial.
The rivals in 1980s Mode all have a crush on Jokichi Yudasei. The player character is Ryoba Aishi, Ayano's mother, and the yandere from the Mysterious and Basement Tapes. Jokichi Yudasei is also Ryoba's senpai.
As of 10th of October, 2021, the 1980s rivals have been revealed and introduced in the YandereDev 1980s Mode Announcement Trailer.

Sumire Saitozaki is the tutorial rival in 1980s Mode. She is killed by Ryoba Aishi as an introduction to 1980s mode. During the gameplay of both 1980s, and 202X modes, her ghost is located in the girls bathroom on the 3rd floor. Canonically deceased.
She doesn't appear during Mission Mode, as she got rejected by Jokichi, and as a result, she killed him before committing suicide.[32]

Kaguya Wakaizumi is the first rival in 1980s Mode. She is a bubbly and cheerful girl trying to be friends with the rainbow girls. Canonically alive.
She's the easiest rival to eliminate, as she acts as a test of what the player has learned during the tutorial.[33]
Main Article • Gallery • Illustrations • Quotes
Moeko Rakuyona is the second rival in 1980s Mode. She is a tomboy who spends time with the rainbow boys, as she is more comfortable around boys than girls.
Her obsession with being a tomboy and fitting in to be "one of the guys" is shown through her character. In secrecy, she engages in pyromancy behind the boys shower rooms. Canonically deceased.
Main Article • Gallery • Illustrations • Quotes
Honami Hodoshima is the third rival in 1980s Mode. She is a shy bookworm and the school librarian. During her week, the rainbow girls spend time in the library to make it slightly harder to kill her.
Honami is described as the stereotypical geeky, nerdy shy girl who managed to even trip down the stairs and fracture herself, all due to a book she was immersed in.[34] Despite her shy nature, she attempted to build up the courage to confess to Jokichi on Friday. Canonically deceased.

Sumiko Tachibana is the fourth rival in 1980s Mode. She is an athlete who exercises a lot and is on a diet. She is described as "pretty competitive,"[35] and her whole personality and life revolve around athleticism, eating healthy, and exercise. Canonically deceased.
She also has a superiority complex, as she attempts to convince or force others to adopt her healthy lifestyle.[36]
Main Article • Gallery • Illustrations • Quotes
Ritsuko Chikanari is the fifth rival in 1980s Mode. She is a snobby rich girl who spends her time sunbathing at the swimming pool. Canonically deceased.
Ritsuko's entitled behavior is seen in multiple situations, such as ignoring the mandated pool sign, asking Ryoba to give $1,000, and her interactions with Jokichi. Her behavior is due to her father unnecessarily spoiling her to a rotten core,[37] even bribing the headmaster to let his daughter in despite her low exam marks.[38] She lacks empathy, as she does not care about the people "beneath her" if they are suffering.[39]
Main Article • Gallery • Illustrations • Quotes
Ai Doruyashi is the sixth rival in 1980s Mode. She is an energetic and friendly girl who dreams of becoming a pop star. Deceased, and canonically, the last rival to die.
Ai is described as a bubbly pop idol, as her only ever-life goal was to be a pop idol, as she thought being an idol would be the highest peak she could aim for in life.[40] Despite this, she also wishes for her fellow idols to fail, and even go far and injure themselves, just to achieve her dream.[36]

Teiko Nabatasai is the seventh rival in 1980s Mode. She is the smartest girl in school, the most dedicated to her studies, and the most serious. Canonically alive.
In her interactions with Senpai, she remains composed and serious. In her free time, she assists teachers with creating lesson plans and has even given lectures in other countries due to her intelligence.

Komako Funakoshi is the eighth rival in 1980s Mode. She is an elegant girl who is described as a Yamato Nadeshiko, or ideal woman. During her week, the rainbow girls follow her to make it harder to kill her.
As the ideal woman, Komako is humble, graceful, polite, pure, devoted to family, ladylike, enjoys "feminine" hobbies, and is overall the most traditional rival. Canonically alive.

Chigusa Busujima is the ninth rival in 1980s Mode. She is a popular model with many male fans at school. Due to that, there's always a group of students near her (including Jokichi).
As a rising gravure model, Chigusa appreciates vulgar comments, wants to duo with Ryoba near the pool, and has done photoshoots for different magazines. She compliments and teases every male fan of hers, like Jokichi, and is often seen near the pool in her gravure bikini posing for the cameras. Canonically alive.

Sonoko Sakanoue is the tenth and final rival of 1980s Mode. She is The Journalist's apprentice and a former (but returning) student at Akademi. She is investigating Jokichi. During her week, a group of students walk around the school and investigate others.
As a detective, she is extremely serious, and her conversations with Jokichi are mostly based on catching "the killer". She thinks for her safety, as she carries pepper spray and has students walking around school with cameras looking for any suspicious behavior.
She doesn't appear in the alternate timeline, and the game ends on Chigusa as The Journalist never asked her to return to the Akademi. Canonically alive.
Test Rivals
NOTE: These rivals are only for testing and are not rivals in the final game. Currently, there have only been four test rivals.
She is a test rival of Yandere Simulator Prototype. She hasn't appeared in the game ever since. She was looking the same as Ayano Aishi, except that she had different stockings and her hair and eyes were yellow. Her name is taken from character with the same name from the manga K-ON!. Her name was later reused and slighty altered for Sumire Saitozaki.
Victim-chan was the second test rival. Her purpose was to show how students react to murder and how to get away with it. She was eventually removed from the game.
Main article • Gallery • Illustrations
Rival-chan uses the original model for Osana Najimi, so they are often confused with each other. Rival-chan only existed to test the red rival outline of Yandere Vision, along with the red "string of fate", and to stand in for Osana. She then shared her appearance with Raibaru Fumetsu, Osana's friend and constant companion, until her design got slightly altered and later on fully revamped.[41]

Kokona Haruka was the fourth and the last test rival. Unlike her predecessors, she was not removed from the game, and is now a normal student with no crush. She canonically had a crush on Taro before the events of the game, but it was brief as Kokona realized that they have nothing in common. Altrough she's not a test rival anymore, her backstory introduced during that time is still canon.
Kokona also gives a tutorial on various elimination methods after the introduction.
In Endless Mode, the game will randomly generate a rival each week for an unlimited number of weeks until Ayano gets caught. The player will have to stalk Taro until they identify the newest rival.[42] They will not have special stockings. They will have the normal functions of a rival, and the player will be able to eliminate them the same way as any rival in Story Mode.
It was confirmed that 11 rivals (excluding Sumire Saitozaki) were originally planned for the 1980s Mode. However, one of the rival's concepts, codenamed "Gloomy," was eventually rejected.[43]
Her personality would have been shy, gloomy, and asocial. During her week, it would be raining, and a thunderstorm would take place. An aspiring meteorologist, she would have spent most of her time outdoors to study the thunderstorm and gather data during the rain. Her canon elimination would have been getting electrocuted by her equipment.
Possible DLC Rivals
YandereDev has stated that he might consider creating DLC rivals in 2014. These rivals would either be non-canon, or would require unique coding to be implemented.[44] If DLC rivals do get added to the game, they would most likely appear after Megami's week.[45] According to YandereDev in 2017, he's still considering this idea, including Kokona as a DLC rival.[46]
Possible DLC rivals include:
- A shrinemaiden[47]
- A rookie policewoman.
- A pair of twins.
- Another yandere girl.
- A magical girl.[48]
- Midori Gurin (armed with knowledge from constantly asking YandereDev questions).
- Kokona Haruka (Forced to relive one week of her life over and over again, and can only escape the time loop by killing Ayano).[49]
- A mad scientist (Kaga Kusha's rival).[50]
- A punk rock girl, who was the leader of the Light Music Club last year and was Miyuji's inspiration.[50] This could be Gita Yamahato.[51]
Possible Halloween-themed DLC rivals include:
- A succubus.
- Phantom Girl (Otherwise known as Sumire Saitozaki).
- A shapeshifter.[52]
Trivia
- The 202X Rivals were added to the official site on September 28th, 2016, and the 1989 Rivals (Except Sumire) were added to the official site on November 11th, 2021.
- At one point, there was an elimination method that was similar to tampering with the school diving boards so that the rival would smash their face into the ground, but it was criticized for being "too Looney Tunes," so the method never happened.[53]
- A car bomb would be an appropriate way to eliminate one particular rival, but this is not very yandere-like.[54]
- There is an old post detailing all ten of the rivals.[55] Although outdated, some information has persisted and remained in the game's plan, such as Osana Najimi and Mida Rana.
- YandereDev released a parody of a popular Christmas song on December 26, 2014, which contained two possible rival names: Miyuki-chan and Sadako-chan. The name Miyuki was later used as the name of the protagonist in Magical Girl Pretty Miyuki, a popular anime in Yandere Simulator and no longer used as a future rival. It is unknown if the name Sadako will be in future used as well.
- YandereDev later revealed that he only used those names because he thought they were common, generic Japanese names.[56]
- The very first silhouettes of the DLC rivals seen in The Curious Case of Kokona Haruka were not an actual original art, and are only revealed to be characters from other media.
- There was originally going to be a short loli rival, but YandereDev is opposed to the idea now because of all the work and problems it would create.[57]
- Only the rivals will have dark secrets, not regular NPCs,[58] with the exception of certain characters like The Journalist.
- Pregnancy is a possible dark secret of one of the rivals.[59]
- As of June 30th 2025 build, killing a rival who is also a club leader will not shut down the club; each club that contains a rival in it will have one more person in it than usual so that it can stay open even though someone died. A substitute will take the place of the normal club leader.[60][60]
- A befriended rival may comment on Ayano not interacting with Taro.[61]
- Although most rivals travel to school through walking or taking a train into town, Megami will arrive by helicopter.[62]
- While Osana is the first official rival, Oka Ruto was technically implemented before her, although not as a rival. She was added in the November 15th 2015 build as the leader of the Occult Club before Shin Higaku was implemented, and was removed in the August 18th 2018 build.
- In some later versions of the game, she could be seen in Buraza Town as a passerby. She was removed in October 10 2021 build.
- YandereDev thinks it would be cool for each rival to have 'an "appreciation day"', where rivals would get fan art and other related stuff on their day.[63]
- Ayano and Ryoba regard their rivals as threats and obstacles. They do not see the rivals personality, traits or flaws, rather, they just perceive the girls as threats.[64]
- Ryoba's analysis of their personalities in her monologue doesn't change her opinion about her rivals.[64]
- When a rival is matchmade with her suitor, she tells her suitor about her problem, for which the suitor will solve for her.[65] Same applies if she gets into a relationship with Taro Yamada.[66]
- All 202X rivals will have the lovestruck persona.[67]
- According to YandereDev, Ritsuko is the richest 1980s rival. While the other girls come from similar families with little to no differences in wealth.[68]
- The 1980s rivals were not intended to be counterparts of the 202X rivals.[68]
- The majority of the rivals from 1989 now reside in Tokyo.[69]
- According to YandereDev, in any timeline where Taro Yamada got with a rival, or the latter got with her suitor, they would eventually have a child together.[70]
- YandereDev ranks the 202X rivals' pureness from the top, being Muja, Amai, and Asu. Revealing the rest of the rivals would result in a spoiler.[71]
- In the future, YandereDev may make a new "Rival Introduction" video featuring the new models once they are ready to be implemented into the game.[72]
- Each 202X rival has a type. They'll either fall for their type, or Taro.[73]
- On YandereDev's secondary channel, he posted a PMV-style (Picture Music Video) video featuring a series of illustrations of each rival, all eliminated in different ways. In the description of that video, YandereDev mentions that only one rival is depicted with her canonical elimination method; however, he didn't say which rival it is.
- According to YandereDev, every rival who is canonically dead has a sibling.[74]
- The rivals aren't worried about death in their day-to-day lives. They see it as an inevitable part of life that's very far off, and although it's terrifying, they don't consider it a problem. Oka is the only one who thinks differently, as she believes in an afterlife and considers dying to be just a transition between forms.[75]
