This article is for Rival-chan. Were you looking for Raibaru Fumetsu or Osana Najimi?

Rival-chan was a placeholder stand-in for Osana Najimi, the first official rival.[1]

Appearance[]

Rival-chan was extremely short and was the shortest character in the game. She had flushed cheeks, a soft smile, orange-amber eyes, and pale skin. Her yellow-orange hair was worn in two slightly curled pigtails. To keep her hair up, she wore ruffled pink and white polka-dotted scrunchies and a purple ribbon.

She wore the default female school uniform, unless customized by the player, and black shoes with loose white socks, however in title screen, she's shown with white socks instead.

In the original sprite arts visible in the Content Checklist Rival-chan had blue eyes. In the Osana specific eliminations sprite arts, Rival-chan was also seen with Osana's twin-tails.

In Yandere Vision, Rival-chan had a red outline.

Purpose[]

RivalYanVision

Rival-chan is outlined red.

She was originally implemented to test the rival outline.[2] Because she wasn't a "real" student and just a 3D model, sending a picture or panty shot of Rival-chan to Info-chan would do nothing, she wasn't affected by the player's actions or anything else. She was later replaced with Osana Najimi, a character with completely different design, as this version "didn't look tsundere enough". For many years, Rival-chan existed only as a placeholder model.[3] Her appearance was eventually given to Raibaru Fumetsu.

Rival-chan did not have a programmed routine. In April 2015, YandereDev said that she would walk around,[4] but that was before Osana's original appearance became Rival-chan's.[3] She stood by the closest cherry tree to the left of the fountain in the plaza.

She was disabled and re-enabled several times during development in Yandere Simulator; she was accidentally disabled in the July 1st, 2019 build, but was later restored in the July 3rd, 2019 build, then re-disabled in the July 18th, 2019 build because Raibaru Fumetsu was in development. She was restored in the June 15th, 2020 build and subsequently disabled again in the July 1st, 2020 build. She no longer exists in the normal game after her replacement. However, she can still be seen as the mindslave in the title screen after Osana was killed by a mindslave.

Rival-chan also made multiple cameos in the Content Checklist, where she is shown as the target of nearly every elimination method, but on August 18th, 2024 build, she was replaced with Osana Najimi and Raibaru Fumetsu.

YandereDev called her "indestructible", as apparently many players have tried to kill her to no avail.[5]

Other appearances[]

She appeared in the spin-off game Yandere Clicker back when she was named Osana Najimi. Her face was used for the "Imouto" option, described as "A kawaii Imouto who will stab Senpai for you". However, she was not Senpai's sister and should not be mistaken as such.[6] She also makes a small cameo in the "April Fools Parody Trailer", where her photos appear on the corkboard. Knives through Rival-chan's head hold the photos up. This scene appears around 0:33.

She makes another cameo in "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder", where Rival-chan was hunted down by Ayano Aishi through the woods and eventually killed.

Rival-chan is a main character in the video "Indestructible Rival" and its sequel, "Indestructible Rival 2", where Ayano unsuccessfully tries to kill her in multiple ways, giving up afterwards.

Trivia[]

  • She was the only unprogrammed NPC whose uniform would change according to the player's choices.
  • Before the November 15th, 2015 Build, she always stood by the first cherry tree by the school entrance. She was moved to the plaza in the November 15th, 2015 Build.
  • If the player pressed Space, she would cycle through several animations. This feature was removed when Yandere Simulator began to run in Unity 2017.
  • Her 3D model is available on the Unity Asset store, and her model is named Satomi Makise.
  • From the September 1st, 2017 Build to the April 2nd, 2018 Build, players could load students with her hairstyle. The reason why her hairstyle was added into game files, JSON and Pose Mode were because a fan wanted to pose her.[7]
    • It has been removed as of the April 2nd, 2018 Build.
  • She can still be enabled via kgftbz's PoseMod.[8]
  • The protagonist can use her hairstyle if the player activates Easter Eggs and presses H to cycle through different hairstyles.
  • On July 15, 2019, it was confirmed that her design was going to be used for the "Mysterious Obstacle" during Osana's week, who was later revealed to be Raibaru Fumetsu.
