Kocho Shuyona is an antagonist in Yandere Simulator. He is a faculty member and the headmaster of Akademi.

He is the reason behind some of Akademi's strange rules. According to Mysterious Tape #2, he is rumored to be bribing the Police and media to stay away from the school for unspecified reasons.

He has a secret personality and backstory. He will not factor into gameplay, but he plays a large role in the game's backstory and lore. He works in the Headmaster's Office.

In one of the delinquents' tasks, it seems he has alcohol under his desk, implying he may have a developing/ongoing addiction.

Appearance

Kocho has short, dark brown hair and brown eyes.

He wears a light blue shirt with a red tie under a green vest, light brown pants and dark brown shoes. He also wears silver round glasses.

In the 1980s, he wore a green jacket and held a blue file.

Background

Kocho was born in 1960. He started his career as the headmaster of Akademi after being hired by Saisho Saikou in 1985. He started recording tapes about his time as headmaster of Akademi shortly after being gifted a tape recorder by Saisho.

At some point, he was blackmailed by Info-chan into letting her use the Info Club room as her own personal room. He attempted to find out who she was, but was unsuccessful.

Personality

Kocho Shuyona is the headmaster of Ayano's school. He is 60 years old, and he has held the same position since 1985, when the prestigious school first opened its doors.

At the beginning of his career, he was a cheerful, optimistic, energetic young man who was full of hope for the future. However, over the course of his long tenure, his demeanor has changed drastically. He has become a cynical, pessimistic, world-weary old man who seems to have completely lost his faith in the world - especially its youth.

What happened over the course of the past few decades to change this man in such drastic ways? What regrets does he live with? What kind of decisions will he make now, at the end of his career, now that he has so little to lose?

— Description on Official Website

The school's headmaster. \ An extremely reclusive person, he rarely leaves his office or addresses the student body in person. \ The center of numerous unsavory rumors, although none have been proven.

— Description from Info-chan

An extremely busy person; rarely leaves his office or addresses the student body in person. \ Has been growing paranoid that there may be a killer in his school.

— Description in Ryoba's notebook
KochoDefense

Kocho pulling out his taser and aiming it at the player (Ayano).

Kocho is very stubborn and does not want to admit that he has lost control of the school's situation. However, under extreme circumstances (for example, if an entire class dies), he might allow the school to shut down.[1]

In 1980s Mode, he is eager to begin work as the headmaster; he is energetic, optimistic, and cheerful.[2]In Story Mode, he is close to retirement; he is world-weary, pessimistic, and cynical. As he is less than a year away from retirement, he does not see a reason to care about anything and delegates most of his work to Genka Kunahito.[3]

He will not hesitate to use his taser on Ayano Aishi if she gets too close and would not defend her from the bullies.[4]

Routine

KochoOnHisSaikouLaptop

Kocho sits in his chair working on his Saikou computer every day. He'll leave his office at lunchtime and returns during cleaning time.

If Ayano enters the office, he will be shocked, and if she comes closer, he will stand up and point a taser at her; if she stands too close to him for 60 seconds, gets far too close to him, make him stand up and sit down 10 times, or has a corpse or weapon, he will tase her, resulting in a Game Over.

If Ayano enters the office while wearing a mask or cardboard box, he will still recognize her and assume she's replicating something she saw in a video game before getting annoyed and demanding for her to leave his office.

1980s Mode

Kocho stays in his office, sitting in his chair working on some papers.

Unlike in the original game, if Ryoba enters the office, Kocho will talk to her in a friendly way. If she comes in wearing a mask, Kocho would think it's something young people do nowadays and leave her alone. He will not stand up and point a taser at her if she stands too close to him for too long. However, if he witnesses Ryoba carrying a corpse or has a weapon, he will tase her, resulting in a Game Over.

Relationships

Ryoba Aishi

Main article: Ryoba Aishi

As shown in 1980s Mode, Kocho was friendly towards Ryoba when first entering his office, but he was unaware that she was the one responsible for Sumire Saitozaki's death.

However, at the end of the mode, when Ryoba gets arrested and stood on trial for murder by the Journalist for killing some girls that had a crush on Jokichi Yudasei but was able to escape a guilty verdict, Kocho became hostile where he began to strongly develop a grudge against her, being convinced that the Journalist was telling the truth about her as evident on Headmaster Tape #4 and is frustrated that the court would declare her innocent. He also became aware how truly manipulative Ryoba is, when he is shown to be unconvinced of her innocence. Kocho is extremely reluctant to let Ryoba return to the school, stand on a stage, and hand her a diploma but was told by Saisho Saikou to let it go. He also blamed her for damaging Akademi's reputation by causing the school's enrollment rates to drop drastically and making the public call the Akademi the 'Murder School'.

Ayano Aishi

Main article: Ayano Aishi

Due to Ryoba's actions revealed by the Journalist at the trial in 1989, Kocho is completely hostile towards Ayano and extremely despises her for her share of nature as her mother, especially that she is the daughter of a real serial killer who caused the Akademi's damaged reputation. His hatred towards Ayano is powered by his fear, knowing that she is just exactly like her mother.

When Ayano enters his office, Kocho will be startled by her sudden entrance, but will calm down, and will be seemingly intolerant of her presence around the school due to him sounding reluctant with her. He begrudgingly refused Ayano's presence in his office as he is convinced she is just dangerous like as her mother and will demand her to leave his office if Ayano stays for too long. As long she stays around Akademi, Kocho expects her to repeat her mother's crimes in the future.

Kocho is shown to take pleasure of harming Ayano, evidenced when the player gets a game over by having him tase Ayano as a self-defense, rendering her unconscious. For unknown reason, he contacts Mr. Saikou that a deal is off. It is currently unknown what the deal was about. There might be a possibility that it has something to do with Ayano or Megami.

Kunahito Family

Kocho does acknowledge that both Genka and Mae are beautiful women, however, he doesn't initiate things with his female co-workers.[5]

Mae Kunahito

Kocho was aware that Mae was extremely qualified for the job, due to her numerous and respectable credentials.[6]

Genka Kunahito

Kocho is viewed by Genka as an irresponsible, incompetent, bumbling senile dotard who can barely keep the school running. In her mind, Genka questions a lot of his decisions (like forbidding people to enter a room suspiciously labeled the "Info Club"), but doesn't speak up for fear of losing her job. With less than a year left until retirement, he delegated most of his administrative duties to Genka as the Guidance Counselor, who practically functions as his secretary as Kocho doesn't have much of a reason to care about anything anymore. This leaves Genka (and everyone else) feeling like she is actually the one who runs the school, and like Kocho is just a figurehead who will be out the door soon. This is pretty much that everyone expected her to become the school's new headmistress once Kocho retires.[7]

The Journalist

Main article: The Journalist

Kocho doesn't have much interaction with the Journalist, although, it was mentioned that he always refused to let the Journalist enter Akademi. He, along with Jokichi and Sonoko Sakanoue, believed that the Journalist was telling the truth about Ryoba's dark nature as evidenced by the Headmaster Tape #4 where he is heard feeling frustrated and furious over everyone would let themselves get blinded by her lies and that the court would declare her as innocent when she is the actual killer. Kocho doesn't blame the Journalist but Ryoba.

Saisho Saikou

Main article: Saisho Saikou

Saisho was Kocho's former late boss who hired him as the Akademi's Headmaster in 1985, which gave him excitement. He gifted him with the tape player.

In Headmaster Tape #6, Kocho mentions meeting up with his boss every week for discussion about Akademi.

In Headmaster Tape #9, Kocho eventually discovers his boss being a nationalist with plans for world domination and harboring a half-century-long grudge when Saisho told him his backstory, but he claims it wouldn't matter a bit.

Ichirou Saikou

Main article: Ichirou Saikou

After Saisho retired from his business due to his declining health, Ichirou became Kocho's boss.

Trivia

  • He was implemented in the October 1st, 2017 Build.
  • It is currently impossible to kill him, as he is unaffected by any Easter Eggs.
  • If all teachers are deceased and Ayano attempts to leave school without disposing of a corpse, Kocho will discover the corpse.[8]
  • In the future, Ayano will be able to take a picture of rivals breaking school rules and report them to him or Genka to get them expelled.[9]
  • Kocho hasn't touched the katana's handle since 1988.[10]
    • Additionally, it was a gift from Saisho.[11]
  • Kochou "古長" can be translated as "old leader". Kouchou, written in other kanji (same pronunciation) "校長", means headmaster. Shuyouna "主要な" means main; major.
  • He is probably the only member of the Akademi staff who met Ryoba Aishi.[12]
  • While he has some self-defense training, he is too old for physical combat, which is why he uses a taser.[13]
  • Only the faculty are aware of his taser.[14]
  • He does not appear in Mission Mode.
  • He disappears during SNAP mode.
  • If the player deploys stink bombs in his office, he disappears instantly and for the rest of the day.
  • He is one of the three characters to appear both in Story Mode and 1980s Mode, the others being the Hair Salon Clerk and Sumire Saitozaki.
  • He replaces Megami's role after killing a Student Council member in 1980s Mode.
  • If Taro Yamada reported to Kocho about Mida Rana seducing him, his hypothetical dialogue shows that Kocho would think that Taro is insane for reporting it.[15]
  • When looking at the alcohol bottle that Kocho hides under his desk, it is revealed that the alcohol bottle is Sake.
  • Kocho is the reason why the 202X uniforms are white, as oppose to brown in 1980s Mode.[16]
  • Kocho's lore of being invincible is because of YandereDev's process of writing lore, by stating the reason, then justifying it, then working backwards with the lore.[17]
  • Because Kocho appears in both timelines, he has two similar but different conversational topics. He is the only NPC who has this unique feature.
  • Kocho is the only person who knows how the nicknaming tradition started at Akademi.[18]

Ahh...! It's...it's you!
No, that would be impossible...you must be...her daughter...
I'll tolerate you in my school, but not in my office. Leave at once.
There is nothing for you to achieve here. Just. Get. Out.

What...in...blazes are you doing?
Are you trying to re-enact something you saw in a video game?
Ugh, do you really think such a stupid ploy is going to work?
I know who you are. It's obvious. You're not fooling anyone.
I don't have time for this tomfoolery. Leave at once!

— Kocho if Ayano enters his office wearing a mask or cardboard box.

Not another step!
You're up to no good!, I know it!

Mr Saikou...the deal is off.

— Kocho during the ?????????? Game Over.

No words can express the sense of loss we feel as a result of this terrible tragedy...

— Kocho during the memorial service.

Ah...let's see...where to start? Well...I guess I'll start at the beginning!
My name is Kocho Shuyona, and I've just been chosen to be the Headmaster at Akademi!
To be honest, I'm not sure if I really believe this is happening!
I keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming!
I mean, the entire nation has been talking about this school for months.
The idea of an elite school that only opens its doors to the most intelligent students in Japan- a,a place for the most promising young men and women of today to be transformed into the leaders of tomorrow- a school built for the sole purpose of being the most prestigious learning institute in the country- it's an ambitious undertaking, to say the least!
But the thing that shocks everyone the most is that the school is being bankrolled by Saikou Corp!
Who would have expected an electronics company to found a school?
At first, I thought it was some kind of...long-term business plan.
Maybe they wanted to build a place to gather the best and brightest students of Japan, and...train them to be their next generation of employees.
But...it turns out that I was wrong - REALLY wrong - and, I got to hear the truth straight from Mr. Saikou himself!
That's right - I just met THE Saisho Saikou in person. I'm still shaking!
It was like...getting to meet Leonardo da Vinci...or, or Thomas Edison!
I've lost count of how many things he's invented or improved, I...I don't think there's a single product in my home that doesn't have the Saikou logo on it!
A man whose ideas and inventions change the world...people like that are only born once a century!
Anyway...the reason he built this school...it blew my mind!
It's not something he's ever mentioned in public, but...he didn't tell me to keep it a secret either, so...here it is!
It's his daughter!
It's all for his daughter!
He cherishes her more than life itself - even more than his multi-billion dollar corporate empire.
He wants to make her dreams come true, so he's building a high school customized to suit her exact tastes.
The name of the school, the location where it's being constructed, even the exact layout of the building...everything was chosen by his daughter.
His mission is to make sure that the best years of her life happen at Akademi.
She gets to decide who's allowed to enroll, she gets to decide the school's policies, and...I'm pretty sure she gets to be student council president starting from day one, no questions asked.
So, not only will this school be a collection of Japan's most highly-qualified teachers and most brilliant students, but it's also a giant shining monument to a father's love for his daughter!
Heh, it almost brings a tear to my eye.
And I'M going to be the headmaster!
I'm still surprised I actually had the courage to send in my application!
I, I guess it's because the qualifications they were looking for seemed...surprisingly low, compared to the qualifications for every other position at the school.
In fact, Mr Saikou told me I was perfect for the job after just...asking me a few questions.
There's a part of me that wonders if...his daughter just wants the school's headmaster to have a...certain appearance, or a certain name, or voice, or...something.
I'm not really sure if I got the job because I qualify for it, or because...I meet some invisible criteria that I'm not aware of.
I guess Mr. Saikou could tell I was nervous, because he gave me a gift - this portable tape recorder!
One of his inventions.
He told me it's therapeutic to record an audio journal when you're feeling overwhelmed.
That's the whole reason I'm recording this right now.
And, I gotta say...it...actually worked! I feel much better now!
You know, this is kinda fun...it might turn into a habit, heh!
I can't stop thinking about the last thing he said before he left.
He called me...
"Headmaster Shuyona."
Ha...It'll be a while before I get used to hearing that!

— Headmaster Tape #1.

'Huh? Oh, wow...I didn't realize how much dust was on this thing.
Well, I suppose I should consider myself lucky; if I never use this thing, it means everything has been going so smoothly that I just never feel the need to vent!
But...something happened today that really threw me off...
I wouldn't feel right talking about it with any of colleagues, but...I need to get it off my chest...so...maybe recording my thoughts will help!
Today, I visited Saikou headquarters for a routine meeting with Mr. Saikou, just as I've done dozens of times over the past few years.
But...today was different. He was...angry. Foul-mouthed and short-tempered.
I'd never seen him like that before. He didn't reprimand me for anything, and we simply discussed the usual topics...
But...the entire time, he seemed like he was on the verge of...exploding. I was confused and worried, and...frankly...scared.
His secretary must have seen how shaken I was, because...after the meeting, she took a moment to assure me that I hadn't done anything wrong...and that Mr. Saikou was angry about a personal matter.
On most days, I would have never dream of gossiping about the man who signs my paychecks, but...my curiosity got the better of me, and I asked her for details.
She didn't know all the specifics, but...she knew enough to give me a basic summary.
Earlier that day, Mr. Saikou had a furious argument with his daughter, who graduated recently.
Apparently, she doesn't want to inherit the company, and she's decided to leave Japan to travel the world.
This is absolutely unacceptable to his father, because he's invested a lot of resources into giving her the training necessary to take over his empire when he retires.
He had absolute faith that his daughter would inherit his company when the time came, and her decision had invalidated all his plans, along with many years of effort...not to mention an incalculable amount of money.
After a long, heated discussion - well, more like a shouting contest, from the sound of it - Mr. Saikou threatened to disown his daughter...and she had absolutely no problem with that.
He told her, "If you walk out that door, you're no longer a part of this family!" and moments later...she left his office without a word.
Mr. Saikou is a man who refuses to compromise, and only accepts the results he wants.
I'm 100% certain that from this day forward...his daughter is dead to him.
His secretary told me a little more about the way Mr. Saikou raised his daughter...
Starting from early childhood, she was given training to prepare her for the responsibilities that come with operating a company - training that became more advanced and intense with each passing year.
Mr. Saikou also has a son...but...he didn't put his son through the same sort of training as his daughter.
Instead, he granted his son a perfectly normal childhood...perhaps out of guilt for what he did to his daughter.
But now he's making preparations to rapidly change the directions of his son's life, so the boy will acquire the traits and skills that his sister spent her entire life developing.
The strangest part...is the exact reason why Mr. Saikou's daughter wants to travel the world.
One phrase the secretary kept hearing was..."my sister".
Apparently, Mr Saikou's daughter is absolutely convinced that she has a sister somewhere in the world...and that she needs to find her.
But...Mr. Saikou only has two children...so...if she says she has a sister...there are three options:'
She's speaking figuratively, she's...actually become delusional, or...Mr. Saikou has an illegitimate child.
...At this point, the secretary decided she'd said too much, and stopped talking.
I had a feeling I was starting to tread on dangerous ground, so I choose not to pry any further.
Even though I wound up with more questions than answers, at least now I know why he was so angry.
Losing his daughter - along with more than a decade of money, planning, and effort - must be an incredibly painful experience.
But, after hearing all of this...it'll be hard for me to look at him the same way I used to.
He told me he built Akademi to give his daughter the perfect, ideal high school life. But...now I think that was just a cover story.
I think built Akademi and made his daughter the student council president to put her through the experience of being in charge of an organisation.
Another...another step in the process of turning her into the perfect CEO! A...A training simulation!
And now he's going to put his son through an accelerated version of that process. Ahh, that poor boy...
...It doesn't surprise me at all that she defied her father and ran away from all that...
...But in the end, it wasn't pressure or stress that made her reject her father's wishes...it was this weird notion that she has a sister...maybe all the stress drove her crazy?
The weirdest thing of all is that when I imagine Mr. Saikou with another daughter, I have a mental image of what she would look like.
But...I get a headache if I picture her in mind for too long. Man...really creeps me out.
...If Akademi was built solely for one girl, and that girl has graduated...what happens next?
I was afraid the school was going to be shut down, but...apparently, Mr. Saikou just wants me to continue business as usual.
A lot of the students who graduate from this school get offers from Saikou Corp almost immediately after graduation...so I guess this place really did turn out to be a training ground for future Saikou employees after all.
I don't feel angry, or sad...just...disenchanted.
...Well, it's an easy job...and I can't argue with the pay, so...I guess I'll just stay on my current course for now.
Man...even though I know that nobody is going to listen to this tape, I feel way better after recording my thoughts! Ha!
I guess Mr. Saikou's gift was good for something after all! Thanks for hearing me out, Mr Tape Recorder! Ha!
With that said, I hope I don't have to use you again anytime soon. Ahaha! Ahh...

— Headmaster tape #2.

Out of all the different ways it could have turned out...I never imagined it like this.
A few days ago, I received an e-mail with screenshots of...certain directories on my personal computer.
I don't know how anyone could have managed to accomplish something like that, but...I can only assume that this person must've been...some kind of...top-class computer hacker.
They threatened to expose what I've been doing...unless...I meet their demands.
Being discovered and blackmailed has been my worst fear for over a decade now, but...this person - whoever they are - isn't asking for money.
Instead, they want complete ownership...of a single room at Akademi High.
They intend to occupy this room for a full semester...and they have made it very clear that they are not to be disturbed for any reason.
I have no clue what they intend to do in this room, but...I'm not really in a position to decline.
All things considered, this situation isn't as bad as it could have been.
They could have demanded an absurd sum of money...and instead, all they want is...a room.
Their request seemed harmless enough, and...there was a suitable room available, so I decided to comply with their demands.
Well...it's not like I really have a choice in the first place.
They also asked me to make sure that the room had certain equipment inside of it before they arrived - computer monitors and hard drives.
We already had a surplus of supplies like that, so...it wasn't a problem.
The tricky part was convincing the rest of the faculty not to enter a specific room for any reason...and not to question it, either.
I spent a long time mulling it over, and...eventually came up with a cover story that seemed convincing enough to believe.
To be perfectly honest, I'm...a little proud of it.
I told the faculty that a "special needs student" with extreme agoraphobia wishes to attend Akademi.
Because of their intense social anxiety, they will remain secluded in one of the school's rooms...and are not to be disturbed, because it would trigger a panic attack.
Teachers will record their lectures when class is in session, and e-mail these recordings - along with class assignments - to the reclusive student once per day.
I will personally handle anything else the student requires, such as meals at lunchtime.
Some of the teachers thought my story sounded a little sketchy, and wanted to hear details.
Their questions were harmless, but...I was sweating bullets, and I felt like I was being interrogated by police.
Eventually, I convinced them to believe the cover story...and the meeting ended with the faculty praising me for being so accommodating to a..."mentally handicapped adolescent." Heh....
I felt a little guilty for deceiving them, but...it's far from the worst thing I've done.
The only thing that matters is the end result: we now have a room which is off-limits to students and faculty alike.
The hacker never told me their name...age...even their gender - it's frustrating!
If I'm going to be put through such a harrowing experience, I at least want to know who's behind it!
I set up a hidden camera outside of the room that has been set aside for the hacker.
When I got into work this morning, I checked the recording...Only to find that it had been replaced with a graphic of a black silhouette wearing a red wig, along with the words...
"Don't try this again."
The message...has been received...loud and clear.
I asked the hacker if they needed anything else from me...daily meals, or...anything of the sort.
They told me not to worry about them...and to simply go about my business as usual.
They explicitly told me to pretend they don't exist.
It's going to be...nearly impossible for me to put them out of my mind...when they could end my career with a single click.
It feels like there's a slimy creature...crawling underneath my clothing...and I simply have to grit my teeth and live with it.
Then again...I don't...really have any right to complain...perhaps this is simply...karmic retribution...for my actions.
It's very fortunate that these little..."therapy sessions"...were confined to cassette tapes.
If I had been making digital recordings instead, the...hacker...would have a lot of very dangerous information right now.
With that said...I no longer feel comfortable keeping these tapes around. They're too much of a liability.
I should dispose of them, but...it would be such a shame.
30 years of my innermost thoughts, just...tossed away. Like trash.
It would feel like I'm...wiping someone's memory...
What - what was the point of recording anything at all...if I was just going to destroy it one day?
There was never anyone in my life who I felt comfortable expressing my anxieties to.
This tape recorder has been like a...like a close friend...who I could trust with my deepest secrets.
I know I have to dispose of these tapes, but...maybe I'll keep them...for a few days...
Listen to them one last time...try to figure out where it all went wrong...
Then dispose of them when I've said my goodbyes...but...
There is...one tape...that I'm already prepared to part ways with...
The tape I made after Mr. Saikou's recent, ah...demands.
It's far, far too risky for a recording like that to exist...
That one...must be destroyed...immediately.

Wait...it's you! YOU'RE the killer!

— Kocho if Ryoba brings a corpse or a weapon into his office in 1980s Mode.

Just as I suspected! There really was a serial killer in my school!

— Kocho during the ?????????? Game Over in 1980s Mode.

...oh! Um... hello there, young lady!
Can I, uh... help you with anything?
You don't really... talk much, do you?
Don't you...have a class to run along to?
Well, I suppose there's no harm in letting you spend a bit of time here...

— Kocho if Ryoba enters his office in 1980s Mode

My my, you're quite comfortable here, aren't you?
Care to…introduce yourself??
Most students...don't really do this sort of thing.
You...really seem to have a lot of free time on your hands.

— Kocho if Ryoba gets too close in 1980s Mode.

...uh.
...why are you...doing that?
Is this what the kids like to do these days?
Is this some sort of new fad that nobody told me about?
Well, I suppose that a small amount of tomfoolery is just...part of youth.

— Kocho if Ryoba enters his office wearing a mask or cardboard box in 1980s Mode.

What's wrong with this guy? When I was his age, I had a huge crush on my teacher, and wanted to marry her! He's so lucky!! Why is he complaining?!

— Hypothetical thought from Kocho if Taro Yamada reported to him about Mida Rana.[20]
