Kataba Aishi is the mother of Dozuki Aishi and a former CIA agent. She is also the grandmother of Ryoba and her younger sister, and the great-grandmother of Ayano Aishi and her cousin.

Appearance[]

1989[]

In 1989, Kataba has a shoulder-length, black A-line haircut with noticeable gray hair blended in. Her bangs are parted in the middle, and some hair strands are cut at an angle, with occasional sharp ends. Like the rest of her family, she has dark gray eyes. She has noticeable wrinkles on her face, specifically around her eyes. She wears a light coating of dull pink lipstick. This illustration shows a warm, loving, and friendly expression.

She wears a tight-fitting white blouse with long sleeves, old lavender buttons, one breast pocket on the left, and a well-ironed collar. She wears a soft rose apron with a pink plaid pattern as the sash. She also wears an old pink, flowy, standard maxi skirt with velvet maroon Mary Janes. In this illustration, she wears 3 pieces of jewelry, including a gold wedding band on her right hand, a gold necklace with a heart-shaped pendant attached to the chain laid on her neck, and a French gray beaded bracelet on her left hand.

1950s[]

In the 1950s, Kataba appears more mysterious in this illustration than in her two other ones. Her chin-length hair has tapered ends and bangs parted in the middle. She wears black sunglasses, merlot red lipstick, and the same gold necklace found in her 1989 illustration.

She wears a long, black, glossy coat belted at her waist with a black fitted belt with a silver buckle. Underneath is a scarlet red mini dress with 1/3 of her cleavage exposed. She wears sheer tights with elegant black heels and pulls out a gray pistol from her chest. In this illustration, the platinum diamond of her wedding band is noticeable, and her expression remains serious and determined.

1948[]

In 1948, Kataba appears as a schoolgirl. She has a chin-length A-line haircut with parted bangs and some tapered and jagged ends.

She wears a tight-fitting navy blue seifuku with a wine-red tie and white stripes on the collar. She wears a flowy navy skirt that ends above her ankles, black tights, and outdoor shoes with bunny laces. Her stockings and shoes are similar to those of her daughter and second great-granddaughter.

While she welds a knife behind her, she dons a soft, gentle, cutesy, and feminine[1] expression.

Personality[]

Born in 1930, Kataba grew up in Imperial Japan, where her childhood was shaped by militaristic propaganda, extreme nationalism, and the devastation of World War II. She was 15 when the war ended, and the post-war years of her life were dominated by poverty, hunger, and disillusionment with her government and nation.

In 1948, at the age of 18, Kataba became obsessed with a young man at her high school. She desired a relationship with him but faced competition from ten other girls who were also pursuing him. After using various methods — including lethal ones — to eliminate those ten girls, she confessed to the young man she loved, who accepted her feelings. However, her joy would be short-lived.

With the war over, the United States' focus had shifted to their rising tensions with the Soviet Union, marking the beginning of the Cold War. Japan — given its geographic location and economic potential — was seen as a crucial ally in the region. The U.S. sought to ensure stability in the region and prevent hostile influences from gaining ground. For this reason — and many others — the United States maintained a presence in Japan in the post-war years.

American intelligence agencies — especially the newly-formed "Central Intelligence Agency" — assisted Japanese police in investigating the mysterious deaths and disappearances of high school girls in Kataba's neighborhood. Their investigation eventually led them to identify Kataba as the serial killer they had been pursuing. However, before facing trial, she was offered a deal.

During their investigation into Kataba's murders, the CIA had become genuinely impressed with her remarkable talent for committing various types of crimes while leaving almost no traces of her actions. The agency even started to perceive Kataba as a perfect example of the type of agent they needed for covert operations.

After being caught, Kataba was offered a pardon for her crimes as long as she agreed to work as a "deniable asset" for the CIA — undertaking missions as a spy, an assassin, or whatever else the situation called for. Backed into a corner, with no way out and with very limited options, Kataba reluctantly agreed, under the condition that she would be allowed to continue seeing the young man she loved, and that he would be provided with the wealth necessary to live a comfortable life.

After her recruitment, Kataba underwent extensive training from both Japan's intelligence apparatus and the CIA. She was taught new combat skills, as well as techniques for surveillance, counter-intelligence, sabotage, and covert assassination. Her natural abilities as a serial killer were refined and honed until she was a living weapon in the service of her new handlers.

Kataba was deployed in regions of strategic importance, carrying out high-risk operations to ensure that stability in the region remained unthreatened. As a woman, she leveraged gender stereotypes to her advantage, going undercover in ways that male agents couldn't. When needed, she acted as a seductress, but always stayed loyal to her husband, who was patiently waiting for her back in Japan.

Her missions included assassinations, espionage, and sabotage. She eliminated targets deemed a threat to her employers, dismantled hostile networks, and collected intelligence on foreign military operations. She did not enjoy doing dirty work for the CIA, but after experiencing the horrors of war firsthand throughout her childhood, she was determined to do everything in her power to maintain stability in the region and prevent the flames of war from re-igniting once more.

She gave birth to a daughter in 1950, but due to the need to constantly visit other countries for long periods of time, she was absent for much of her daughter's early childhood. She was deathly afraid that her daughter would never be able to develop any love for her, and attempted to compensate for her long absences by spoiling her daughter rotten at every opportunity she had.

By the early '60s, Kataba's age was beginning to catch up with her. She knew that her career was nearing its end. After training her successors — and one final mission in 1964 — she was allowed to retire. After that last mission, she was granted a full pardon for her crimes in the '40s, and was also paid enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life.

She has never spoken about what her final mission entailed, but sometimes jokes that she "saved the world from nuclear annihilation in the '60s." She laughs heartily whenever she tells this joke...but, sometimes, she can be seen staring off into the distance with a melancholy expression on her face, as if she is thinking about sacrifices made by herself — and others — many long years ago.

Given her violent history and dark past, the CIA considered Kataba to be at high risk of becoming a liability once she no longer worked for them. Shortly after her retirement, a sniper was dispatched to kill her — but, as he aimed his crosshairs through Kataba's bedroom window, he suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder. When he turned around, he saw Kataba standing right behind him.

"You can tell your bosses that they don't have to worry about me."

After this, there were no further attempts on her life.

She has lived in peace since then, content to spend her days relaxing with her husband and doting on her daughter — no matter how old she becomes.

After using various methods - including lethal ones - to eliminate those ten girls, she confessed to the young man she loved, who accepted her feelings. However, her joy would be short-lived.

With the war over, the United States' focus had shifted to their rising tensions with the Soviet Union, marking the beginning of the Cold War. The U.S. was particularly concerned about the spread of communism, especially in East Asia, where movements in China, Korea, and Vietnam were gaining momentum.

Japan - given its geographic location and economic potential - was seen as a crucial counterbalance to communist influence in Asia. The U.S. sought to prevent the spread of communism in the region by using Japan as a forward base to support anti-communist efforts in nearby countries. For this reason - and many others - the United States maintained a presence in Japan in the post-war years.

After being caught, Kataba was offered a pardon for her crimes as long as she agreed to work as a "deniable asset" for the CIA in the Far East - a spy, an assassin, or whatever else the situation called for. She agreed, under the condition that she would be allowed to continue seeing the young man she loved, and that he would be provided with the wealth necessary to live a comfortable life.

Kataba was deployed in nearby countries - Korea, China, and sometimes even Soviet territory. Due to her ethnicity, she blended into Asian settings much easier than Western agents could. Also, as a woman, she leveraged gender stereotypes to her advantage, going undercover in ways that male agents couldn't. When needed, she acted as a seductress, but always stayed loyal to her husband back home.

Her missions included assassinations, espionage, and sabotage. She eliminated Communist sympathizers, spies, and political figures working against U.S. or Japanese interests. She collected intelligence on Chinese and Soviet military operations in East Asia. Once, she even participated in an effort to destabilize a government in Southeast Asia where communism was gaining traction.

When he turned around, he saw Kataba standing right behind him.

"You can tell your bosses that they don't have to worry about me."

After this, there were no further attempts on her life.

— Kataba's old description from official website.

Due to her lifestyle as a secret agent who hunted and killed multiple people, she is capable of welding and operating a firearm.[3]

Her facade is described as "cutesy and feminine".[1]

One of her weaknesses is a "Criminal Record".[2]

Backstory[]

Kataba's eliminated her rivals using bloodshed. She eliminated her rivals in this order: direct attack with a melee weapon, immolation, crushed, drowned, electrocution, death by poisoning, pushed from a tall height, strangulation/suffocation, making use of her environment, and taking advantage of a highly specific situation that would nearly never apply to other situations.[4]

Kataba and her husband were the first Aishi to move to Buraza town. After moving in, her daughter, Dozuki, asked for a basement, in which Kataba happily agreed to.[5] This basement was not easy to construct, as Kataba had to pay foreigners handsomely to shut up about the process, and many Japanese homes not having basements. Despite the number of difficulties, the basement was eventually constructed, and her daughter kidnapped her Senpai, before mindbreaking him.[6]

Relationships[]

Her Family[]

Main article: Aishi Family
Her Husband

Like her first granddaughter, Kataba did not mind-break her husband, and he took care of Dozuki while she was away[7] on missions.

Her Daughter
Main article: Dozuki Aishi

She gave birth to her daughter in 1950,[8] making Kataba 20 years old. She was also overwhelmingly loving to Dozuki, spoiling her to death with whatever she wanted,[1] causing Dozuki to grow up selfish and narrow minded to everyone around her, including her senpai.[6] This made Kataba recognize that she should've not raised Dozuki like a spoiled brat, and was determined to prevent her granddaughter to be like Dozuki. As such, she taught Ryoba to be independent, while slipping in valuable information about murder, getting away with murder, seduction and everyday things. This resulted in Ryoba adopting her grandmother's personality, appearing cute and feminine with a colder, sadistic side.[1]

Dozuki also leeched on her parents,[1][6] which resulted in Kataba doing the majority of child raising for her own daughter.[1][9]

Her Granddaughter
Main article: Ryoba Aishi

Ryoba sees Kataba as a role model, someone aspiring, respect and be like. Ryoba's respect for her grandmother resulted in her wanting to raise her own sister, since she wanted to "surpass" Dozuki for doing a basic act, while allowing Kataba to ease her burden raising another child.[9] Due to these circumstances, Ryoba holds resentment towards Dozuki for the latter's neglect and lack of motherly love towards her and her sister.[6]

Her Great-Granddaughters
Main articles: Ayano Aishi, Cousin

Although her exact relationships with her two granddaughters are unknown, Ayano views Kataba as a friendly lady.[10]

Trivia[]

  • Kataba's name is borrowed from the Japanese saw that has teeth on on one edge only. It translates to "cutting on one side", and is commonly used for larger projects (when the Ryoba saw is not suitable) or flush cutting.[11]
    • The meaning can include a single edge/bevel of a sword or kitchen knife.[12]
  • If Kataba had her own mode, she would have actual gameplay. Unlike her daughter, whose mode would last 5 minutes.[13]
    • However, YandereDev does not plan to any of the rest of the Aishi Family (excluding Ayano Aishi and her mother) to have their own "gameplay mode" in Yandere Simulator.[14]
    • YandereDev imagines her tutorial that teaches the player murder mechanics. They would all be lethal, since Kataba's "game" and her time as a young serial killer wouldn't have any non-lethal eliminations.[4]
  • The CIA had stopped monitoring Kataba and her family prior to the events of 1980s Mode.[15]
  • The inspiration behind Kataba's backstory was that YandereDev is a "huge fan" of Metal Gear Solid 3 and explained that the game influenced him a lot. He was intrigued at the idea of weaving real historial events into a character's background involving geopolitical events that happened in the time they were in.[16]
  • Her description was changed just one day after Kataba was added to the official site, to avoid mentions of political events.
  • According to YandereDev, her husband's backstory is fully written, and he would be glad to share it on the official website once he has artwork.[17]

Quotes[]

You can tell your bosses that they don't have to worry about me.

— What Kataba said to the sniper that attempted to kill her.[2]

Don't be so careless! You could attract attention to the rest of us! When you screw up, it's not just you who suffers, it's also the people around you, as well!

— Hypothetical reaction from Kataba to Ryoba after the court trial.[18]

Dozuki: Hm. She's a lot quieter than I expected her to be. I thought these things were supposed to cry and make an awful racket all the time.
Kataba: She won't cry much. She's one of us.
Dozuki: ...what does that mean?
Kataba: Remember what your life was like before you met your husband?
Dozuki: ...yes.
Kataba: It's the same for her. Cold, dark, empty, grey, silent...she'll be a quiet girl, like you were when you were born. Like I was. In fact, our whole bloodline –
Dozuki: Phew! What a relief. It sure would be a pain if this thing was screeching all the time.
Kataba: ...well, of course, since she won't cry when she needs food, it means that you'll have to keep a close eye on her, and feed her when she needs it, and –
Dozuki: Ugggggh. Can't you just take care of that?
Kataba: ...of course, dear. I'll take care of her needs within reason, although I'll need to ask you to do a few things for her from time to time.
Dozuki: Thank goodness!

— A small, simple hypothetical conversation between Kataba and her daughter after the birth of the latter's daughter, Ryoba Aishi.[19]
