Distractions are a type of game mechanic used to move NPCs to another area to evade them, murder them, or steal an object.
Gameplay[]
There are many types of distractions in Yandere Simulator. Any functional NPC, except for Genka Kunahito, Mae Kunahito, Kocho Shuyona and The Journalist can be distracted.
Teachers can also be distracted by any distraction, but the protagonist will be apprehended by them if her Physical Education isn't raised to "Rank 1", or if she uses an unconcealable, blunt weapon. Students cannot be killed with distractions when they are going to class or if it is class time, with the exception of the radio and stink bombs.
If Ryoba visits Beni Yoshida, the Hairdresser in Buraza Town, the latter can provide 10 tips to Ryoba, each for $9.99. One of the tips named "Distractions" can detail to the player a shortened summary on how to distract functional NPCs in 1980s Mode.
Giggling[]
- Main article: Sanity
A common and popular distraction is to giggle behind a wall or item to attract an NPC to investigate the noise. If the protagonist isn't behind a wall and giggles, the NPC will look at the protagonist in confusion, then continue their routine. If the protagonist attempts to giggle behind a wall/object then come out of that same area while the NPC is performing the "confused" animation, the NPC will stop in their tracks to look at her, then continue to their routine.
NPCs who currently have an event going on may ignore giggles or have their event interrupted by a loud laughter caused by the protagonist.
A student council member can be distracted by a giggle, and they can be technically killed. However, the player needs to use a non threatening weapon that isn't bloody (like a box cutter or earphones) and crouch to avoid making any noise. If successful, the player can manage to kill the student council member just by a giggle.
To do this, the protagonist has to firstly giggle behind a wall/object, wait for the student council member to follow the direction of the giggle, let them perform the "look around in confusion" animation, crouch-walk while they perform their animation, then take out their small weapon and finally murder them without being pushed.
If the protagonist giggles then drops a weapon on the spot that she giggled on, the NPC may investigate the weapon and react appropriately to that weapon. This gives the protagonist a chance to murder student council members, who will stop their walking animation to check out the weapon, and multiple people (if they are not standing at the same time).
If she drops the weapon and the NPC notices it immediately, the latter may ignore it, as they may think she accidentally dropped something. They will check it again after 5 seconds of nothing happening.
Weapons[]
- Main article: Weapons
Any kind of weapons can be used as a distraction to NPCs. If a weapon is considered dangerous (such as a knife or scrap metal), the teacher will look at the item in confusion, grab the item with a napkin, and run back to the Faculty Room to deposit the weapon in a box. If a weapon covered in blood is seen by a student, the latter student may report this suspicious item to their homeroom teacher, who will call the police.
If a "harmless" weapon (such as a measuring tape or a fire extinguisher) is out of place, students and faculty will grab the weapon and place it back in their specific spot where it was originally found. Laughing loudly will cause the NPC to drop the weapon and look at the spot of loud laughter (or the protagonist) in confusion.
Radio[]
- Main articles: Radio, Remote Controller
Another way to distract an NPC is to grab the radio from the Audiovisual Room and play the radio either behind a wall or 3 metres within the NPC. The NPC will hear the radio in confusion, and walk over to the radio to turn it off. If the protagonist turns on the radio when the NPC goes back to their routine, the NPC will look at the protagonist in confusion, but they will not deduct points from the protagonist's reputation. They will then walk over to turn off the radio again.
A remote controller can be used to avoid NPCs looking at the protagonist with suspicion, as the player can repeatedly use the remote controller to distract the NPC no matter where the player is.
Student council members can be distracted with a radio, and can be killed before the animation of turning off the radio stops. The radio functions identically like giggles, which the exception of the student council members keeping their walking animations (in 202X only).
This type of distraction is commonly used during class time when players are pursuing the genocide ending.
Blood[]
- Main article: Corpses
A bucket full of blood can be spilled onto a ground for puddles to form, or poured into a Water Cooler for a trap. Bloody footprints and blood from corpses hit with a sharp weapon would also work as well.
No matter how small the puddle is, a student will eventually notice if they are walking in the direction of the blood puddle. If multiple students see a puddle of blood, 1 student will report the puddle to the teacher, while the others will go to their classroom and hide in fear.
If a student witnesses you mopping up blood after they noticed it, they will react depending to their persona. Faculty members will attempt to apprehend you, while student council members will run to pepper spray you.
Dismembered Body Parts[]
- Main article: Corpses
A limb or head can be used to distract a student or teacher in the game. If placed in their field of view, students will get scared and report the limb to their teacher, whereas the teacher would call the police. If an NPC catches the protagonist holding a dismembered limb or head, the student will react according to their persona, while faculty members will attempt to chase and apprehend the protagonist.
To get a dismembered limb or head, the player must gain access to the Gardening Club's Shed (using a Lockpick, Shed Key or joining the club itself), grab the circular saw, kill the person with any weapon (or the saw itself), and hold "E" to start the dismemberment process. This will leave 6 pools of blood on the ground once the corpse is cut up into little pieces, unless the protagonist uses a Roll of Tarp, which will bag up the limbs and blood.
A heart is considered a body part, and can be used to distract functional NPCs.
Stink Bombs[]
- Main article: Stink Bombs
Stink bombs can also be used to get multiple groups of people out of a specific area/room. The protagonist can craft Ammonium and Balloons in the Workshop bench to get 5 balloons of stink bombs.
Stink bombs, as the name says, are small bombs that leave a nasty stench if thrown at the direction of the NPC. Stink bombs can be suspicious by other NPCs if the player if caught throwing a bomb in their direction, or aiming obviously.
Stink bombs are quite useful to get multiple groups of people out of their seats, especially during class time. It can be used as an alternative to the radio, for which the radio distracts one student one by one in the Genocide route.
Bang Snaps[]
- Main article: Bang Snaps
The bang snaps can be purchased for 5 Info Points (202X only) or the protagonist can grab Silver Fulminate from the Science Lab and Paper from the Faculty Room and craft 20 bang snaps. When used, they can be thrown to distract students, attracting them to a specific spot. Throwing them or obviously aiming is also considered suspicious behavior.
Bang snaps cannot be used during class time.
Pebbles[]
- Main article: Pebbles
Laying on the table in the Dining Room.
The Pebbles are only found in the Karlheinz Asylum, they lay on one of the tables in the Dining Room and the protagonist can take 10 of them at the time. They are similar in use to the Bang Snaps. When used, they can be thrown to distract Drug Addicts and homeless people, attracting them to a specific spot. They can only be thrown from a far distance/obvious throw.
Salty Snack[]
- Main article: Salty Snack
Although they're not able to be picked up by students, they can still be utilized to distract a student and delay their routine. Giving a student a bag of chips will have them accept the offer, eat the chips, then walk to the nearest Drinking Fountain to replenish themselves. Depending if the fountain was tampered or not, the student will either drink and move along, get splashed, or get electrocuted.
If the protagonist tries to offer the same student a bag of chips the second time, the latter will refuse the offer. This also applies to the Student Council, the Delinquents, Kenko Sukoyaka, Banri Masayuki, Osana Najimi (if it isn't Thursday and the Vending Machine hasn't been tampered yet), Sumiko Tachibana, Ritsuko Chikanari, or Chigusa Busujima. In Mission Mode, all students who refused the Salty Snack (with the exception of the 202X student council unless they have been fired through Info-chan's services) will accept the offer.
Trivia[]
- YandereDev added bang snaps in the game due to the fact that both the radio and giggles would lure the NPC out to your spot, rather than creating a distraction away from yourself.[1]
- Delinquents are affected by common distractions, but some distractions (such as weapons) they would ignore, unless said weapon was covered in blood.
- YandereDev has stated that Ayano would only adopt a pet to use it as a tool, such as training it to distract other NPCs.[2]
