Customization Gallery
Customization is changing the characters' or the game's look using intended methods or third-party mods and software.
Overview[]
Story Mode offers the player to customize Senpai's appearance and school uniform before the game starts. Afterwards, these cannot be changed without using the Easter Eggs. However, the game does include mechanics for minor "customization": changing the protagonist's hairstyle in front of a mirror at home, joining specific clubs to obtain corresponding accessories, and altering the appearance of a suitor. Additionally, some students can change their own appearances as a consequence of certain player actions.
The mirror in the Aishi House can be used to change Ayano's hairstyle. There are 11 bang styles, 5 side hair options, 10 ponytail and one braid variations to choose from. To dye her hair, she has to purchase hair dye from the Nozama store. The protagonist's "outward personality" can also be altered by using a mirror at school. In 1980s Mode, changing hairstyles is not yet possible.
If the protagonist discovers which physical traits attract her rival, she can inform her suitor so he can adjust his appearance accordingly. Correct options increase the score multiplier during the date. The options available are as following: slicked back/spiky hair, piercings, bandanas, dyeing hair blonde/black, glasses, jewelry, sunglasses, and fake tan.
Custom Mode allows players to customize the appearance and other features of each character, as well as the main color scheme of the game interface, images shown in cutscenes, voice acting, and character dialogueues. Players can choose from hairstyles of existing students, including those from the main mode, as well as customization options for Senpai's appearance. The 1980s and Mission modes offer very little customization, with the exception of the suitor mechanics.
In early versions of the game, or after activating Easter eggs, players can adjust hairstyles (H), accessories (O for head, P for eyes), and breast size (< and >). The Easter egg mode Pose Mode allows players to customize the appearance, pose, and proportions of existing students directly in Akademi.
Modding[]
Some simple modifications of game resources, such as school uniform textures and music, are supported since very early versions of the game by replacing files in the \YandereSimulator\YandereSimulator_Data\StreamingAssets folder. This method allows players to change the background music, radio tunes, school and sports uniform textures, swimsuit textures, the protagonist's portrait, as well as the main hairstyle texture, loose hair, and the "drills" hairstyle. Instructions for replacing these can be found in the same folder.
Additionally, all key character data is stored in .json files, which players can edit to their liking. After the release of Custom Mode in 2024, the relevance of such modifications decreased, but they were very popular among players prior to that. The game also allows the use and replacement of certain textures for clothing, character portraits, and background music by swapping the corresponding files without the need for third-party software.
However, most players turn to third-party tools and mods, such as Pose Mod by kgftbz and various software for extracting and replacing Unity game resources, particularly textures, models, and game code.
Trivia[]
- Images in
\StreamingAssets\YandereHairfolder were generated automatically and would be used for a "hair selection system".[1]
