Azebiki Aishi is the 7th generation Aishi of the "Saw branch" of the Aishi Family, and the mother of Kataba Aishi.
Appearance[]
Azebiki has dark gray eyes and mid-length dark gray hair done in thick twin braids that lie on her shoulders. The braids are held on by a small gray hair tie. Her bangs are minimal, as some stick outwards, and two minor strands lie at the middle of her hair and hairline, representing what little bangs she has. She wears round Futura black glasses with a thin rim and displays a gentle expression that is shown through her eyes.
Azebiki's outfit is mainly a dark colored school uniform. It consists of a full blackish seifuku with puffy sleeves that are cuffed at her wrists, a white tie, outlines, a midi-length skirt, black stockings, and shoes tied with bunny shoelaces. She also holds the "book with an intricate design" with her left hand, which is found in Kuu Dere's task.
Personality[]
Azebiki Aishi was born in 1910. Like every member of her bloodline, she suffered from the "Aishi Condition," which caused her to perpetually feel a sensation of being "empty" inside, as if some crucial part of her was missing. She was told by her mother that, one day, she would meet a special person whose presence would dispel that "hollow" sensation, and allow her to experience life the same way that normal people do.
Unlike most Aishi, however, Azebiki was not content to say, "Oh well, I guess that's just the way things are..." and patiently wait for the day when she would meet the person who would fix her. Instead, she dedicated her youth to the pursuit of knowledge, and sought a complete understanding of the Aishi Condition - its origin, how it worked, and whether or not it would ever be possible to find a "cure."
Azebiki sought out as many of her relatives as possible and asked them countless questions about their shared condition. "How would you describe the way you felt before you met your loved one, and how you felt afterwards?" "How old were you when you met the person who made your hollow sensation go away?" "Do you still feel the condition as sharply today as you did in the past?" "Was there ever a member of our bloodline who did not have this condition?"
Azebiki's thorough research established several facts:
- The Aishi Condition was weakening slightly with each new generation; the Aishi who were born more recently were less hollow and numb than her oldest ancestors.
- An Aishi's lover is always someone older than themself, even if it was only by one day. This caused Azebiki to use the word "Senpai" to refer to any person who alleviates the symptoms of the Aishi Condition.
- With each year spent in the presence of a Senpai, the symptoms of the Aishi Condition gradually weakened. Theoretically, an Aishi would no longer be reliant on their Senpai after a specific number of years had passed.
- It was impossible to trace the Aishi family history farther back than 1800. Apparently, the Aishi born that year was abandoned as a baby and adopted by an infertile couple who yearned to start a family, making the Aishi family history prior to 1800 completely unknowable.
At this point in history, superstition prevailed over science, and most Aishi referred to their condition as a "curse," believing it to be supernatural in origin. However, no living Aishi could explain *why* their bloodline had been cursed, nor if there was any way to break the curse. Azebiki was extremely reluctant to ever refer to the condition with the word "curse," strongly believing that it would be much more appropriate to categorize the Aishi Condition as a hereditary disease.
Azebiki was obsessed with fully understanding biological inheritance; dominant traits, recessive traits, and the idea of "genes," which was a relatively new concept at that point in history. Unfortunately, because the nature of DNA would not be discovered until 1953 (and the human genome would not be mapped until decades later), Azebiki was doomed to spend most of her life without the puzzle pieces needed to fully comprehend the field of genetics.
Because Azebiki lacked the ability to categorically disprove the notion that her condition was a curse, and also lacked the ability to empirically prove that it was a disease, she chose to dedicate equal amounts of time to researching both science *and* the occult, two fields which could not be further removed from one another. She read a library's worth of scientific literature, and also spent countless hours researching tales of supernatural beings who wielded magic power.
Upon hearing claims that Japan had once been plagued by supernatural entities, she sought evidence, which lead her to stories of "monster slayers" who had driven these entities to extinction in the early 1800s, which lead her to claims that these monster slayers had hailed from a foreign land, which lead her to tales of foreign creatures that sucked blood, ate dreams, and somehow feasted on love itself. However, she was never able to decisively validate these wild stories and fairy tales.
She eventually met her "Senpai" at age 18 in 1928. She strongly resisted the urge to murder the other women who pursued him, wishing to "prove" to herself that she was not a slave to her hereditary condition - but, like most of her relatives, she eventually succumbed to the desire to spill the blood of anyone standing between herself and her loved one. She killed with incredible efficiency; her unmatched intelligence made her one of the most cunning Aishi to ever live.
Although she lived through World War 2, she did not participate in it in any substantial way. (Her younger sister *did* participate in the war...but that story will be told separately.)
Azebiki has lived a remarkably long life; despite being born in 1910, she is still alive in modern day. At over 110 years of age, she is the oldest living Aishi, and is recognized as one of the oldest living human beings in the world. Her wits have not dulled with time, and, at Aishi family gatherings, she is a fountain of information, always extremely eager to share her knowledge with younger Aishi who seek to understand their condition.
Azebiki has expressed an intense fascination with Ayano, who appears to be an "exception" to some of the "rules" of the Aishi Condition. For example, Ayano appears to suffer from the condition more acutely than any of her living relatives, which defies the belief that the condition lessens with each generation. Azebiki has examined Ayano thoroughly, and has described her from being "different from any other Aishi I have ever studied," but has never been able to articulate the reason why.
Her Senpai passed away decades ago. Despite spending most of her life relying on him as "medicine" to "alleviate the symptoms" of her "hereditary disease," she doesn't seem to be negatively impacted by his absence from her life. Younger Aishi who are extremely dependent on their Senpai are shocked that Azebiki is able to function - emotionally or physically - without her Senpai's presence. Whenever she is questioned about this, she launches into a long diatribe filled with numbers:
"By my calculations, our Condition gets 5% weaker with each generation. Presuming that our earliest known ancestor - the one who was born in 1800 - felt the Condition at 100%, and presuming that I am her 7th descendant, this would mean that I was born with only 70% of the Condition's original potency. I spent 70 years with my Senpai before he died, and I felt as though my Condition was lessening by about 1% each year. In other words...I've been at 0% for a while now. I'm cured."
Most Aishi find it difficult to follow along with her words when she rattles off numbers and percentages like this. Some of them choose to dismiss her words as the babbling of a senile old woman. Others are simply appalled by the way she reduces her deceased husband to a mathematical equation. Nonetheless, all Aishi treat her with respect, acknowledging her long years of research into their shared condition.
According to her profile on the Character Page of the Game's Website, Azebiki's weakness is "Still Missing the Last Puzzle Piece."[1] Azebiki is one of the few family members who does not regard the family condition as a curse, but rather refers to it as a hereditary disease.[2]
Azebiki seems to be less sadistic than the average Aishi. While she did kill, she was reluctant as she did not want to succumb to the homicidal urges that came with the Aishi Condition, not wanting to prove herself as a slave to it.
Backstory[]
After finding her Senpai and graduating from high school, Azebiki attended a women's college with a strong science program. During her time in college, she made Hodaka work as the janitor of her college, so that she would never have to be far away from him. At around the age of 20, she gave birth to her daughter, Kataba, in 1930.
After four years of college, she earned her PhD in biology. Wanting to initially become a high school biology teacher, she soon found the work boring, unfulfilling, and unrewarding, causing her to quit her job and apply to work in multiple laboratories doing genetic research. Due to the roles of women in her time, she could not be taken seriously by her workplace and was only able to get positions such as a lab technician or research assistant. These specific roles for Azebiki made her feel like she was fulfilled and contributing to the study of genetic research.[3]
While she had never made a single-handed discovery of her own that would advance the genetics field, she was treated with more respect by her workplace. As more years passed, she worked in various roles related to genetics, such as an instructor, cytogeneticist, and research associate. Her last known work role was a curator at a genetics exhibit in a museum.[3]
In 202X, she lives in an "Old Folks' Home," with caretakers.[4]
Relationships[]
Her Family[]
- Main article: Aishi Family
She sought out as many of her relatives as possible and asked them countless questions about their shared condition.[1]
- Her daughter: Azebiki tries to be a good mother to Kataba. Kataba's opinion of her mother is that she is a smart lady.[5]
- Her Senpai: Hodaka comes from a rich family, and all her rivals wanted to marry into wealth. He worked as the janitor of Azebiki's college so that she would never have to be far away from him. However, she may not have felt true love for him, as when Hodaka was on his deathbed, she was not focused on him, more concerned with her theory about the Aishi Condition being correct.[6]
- Her mother: Due to her mother Kugi growing very distant from Azebiki over the years, due to her daughter's resemblance to Hiki, Kugi's twin whom she murdered, their mother-daughter relationship is likely deteriorated.
- Her father: Azebiki's specific opinions about her father are unknown, but as Kanehira loved and doted on his firstborn from the moment she was born, it can be assumed that their dynamic is far more stable than the dynamic Azebiki has with her mother.
- Her aunt: Azebiki is seen by her mother as a reincarnation of her aunt, Hiki, due to their resemblance as Hiki grew, which caused a strain in their relationship.[1]
- Her younger sister: Azebiki's relationship with her younger sister is mostly described as being the "student-mentor" type. Despite Arisa being the near complete opposite of her big sister, being a cruel and sadistic murderer who enjoyed killing,[3] she respected and appreciated her older sister.[7]
- Her 2nd great-granddaughter: Azebiki has expressed an intense fascination with Ayano, who appears to be an "exception" to some of the "rules" of the Aishi Condition.[1] Ayano didn't feel the need to form a meaningful opinion about her, since all she knows is that Azebiki is interested in her "for some reason."[8] While Azebiki studied Ayano during family reunions, she could not develop any meaningful theories.[9]
Trivia[]
- Azebiki was added to YandereDev's "characters" site on May 15th, 2025.
- The original description had no paragraph about her fascination with Ayano.
- She is named after the Azebiki (畦挽) saw, which is a type of small saw used to cut into the flat surface of a board. This type of saw is mainly used for cutting square-shaped grooves (mortises) and woodworking joints (sliding dovetails) into the wood.[10]
- Azebiki's name is composed of the word ridge [in field] (畦) and saw (挽).[11]
- YandereDev would like to have an artwork of Azebiki at 110 years old and in a wheelchair, but the artist may not want to do it.[3]
- There won't be any "communicate with Azebiki" feature in the game.[12]
- Azebiki Aishi is the oldest living Aishi family member at the age of 116 (as of the main story mode).
- Azebiki was surprised about her mother's age and death.[13]
- Azebiki had 10 rivals.[14]
- Azebiki's favorite color is brown.[15]

Quotes[]
Azebiki: Did anyone else love dad?
Kugi: Yes.
Azebiki: What did you do?
Kugi: Kill them.
Azebiki: How many?
Kugi: One.
Azebiki: Who?
Kugi: ...someone.
Wow, surprising she lasted that long.
Azebiki: "What????? Was that your real job all this time???? What were you doing for the CIA?????"
Kataba: "I can't tell you~ Secret~"
That's strange. I don't feel it anymore. I think my theory was correct.
